Iran is not considered to be Georgia’s particularly important trading partner despite an increase in export and import between the two countries in recent years. Although Georgian-Iranian economic relations and cooperation have a long history, trade between the two countries has grown only in recent years and in 2012 for the first time exceeded $ 100 million.

Experts believe that due to the US-Iranian conflict, replacing Iran as an export country will be much easier for Georgia. There is the problem of replacing imports as the products coming from this country are cheap and designed for a specific business segment that will have to find alternatives that can hike  the prices.

"Today we are still actively cooperating with Iran, it is also ready to carry out import into Georgia and ask our company to  supply sheep. I hope the government has the wisdom to maintain good relations with Iran as we depend on them economically. We import a lot of goods from Iran, for example, 90% of the  roads are made from bitumen imported from Iran. Apart from that, a large amount of transit products are imported from Iran to Georgia bringing  money into the country, ” the  businesswoman Nazi Alasania says.

According to the National Statistical Office, in January-November 2019, goods worth $ 172 296,000 were imported from Iran to Georgia. Georgia brings oil products, including oil coke, oil bitumen and other oil refining waste, mostly from Iran. It’s worth mentioning that Iran is the main supplier of road bitumen to Georgia and its import is growing  annually.

In  January-November 2019, Iran imported from Georgia goods worth $ 67 125 000 , of which ferro-alloys ($ 13 414 000), meat ($ 12 042 800) and timber materials ($ 10 794 900).
